Sleep
Multiple studies have examined lavender aromatherapy for sleep quality. Lillehei and Halcon's 2014 systematic review found generally positive effects on self-reported sleep quality, though objective sleep measures (polysomnography) showed more mixed results. The most consistent finding across studies was reduced self-reported difficulty falling asleep and improved subjective sleep quality ratings.
Pain
The evidence for lavender aromatherapy and pain is more mixed than for anxiety or sleep. Positive effects have been reported for dysmenorrhea, postoperative pain, and procedural pain in some trials, but results are inconsistent across settings. A 2020 systematic review found insufficient evidence to recommend lavender as an analgesic despite promising preliminary findings in some populations.
Physiological Mechanisms
