Organic marshmallow root from dried Althaea officinalis. Cut and sifted for easy brewing, with a mild, faintly sweet, gently earthy flavor and the smooth, silky mouthfeel this root is known for.
Marshmallow root is unusual among dried botanicals: it's brewed cold rather than hot. That single difference is what gives you the soft, slightly viscous cup people come to it for. Pairs beautifully with mullein, chamomile, licorice root, cinnamon, or a spoonful of raw honey.

Brew it cold. Add 1 tablespoon of cut and sifted marshmallow root to 8 oz of cool water, cover, and leave it on the counter or in the fridge for 4 to 12 hours — overnight is easiest. Strain and enjoy. The liquid will be pale and slightly thickened, which is exactly right. If you want it warm, gently heat the strained infusion afterward rather than boiling the root itself.
Mild and faintly sweet with a soft, earthy, slightly starchy character — much gentler than most roots and not bitter at all. The most distinctive thing about it is texture rather than flavor: the cup feels smooth and slightly thickened.
Because the mucilage that gives marshmallow root its character is heat-sensitive. Boiling water breaks down the long polysaccharide chains and reduces how well they form a gel, so a cold or warm infusion produces a fuller, silkier result than a hot steep. This is the opposite of how most roots are prepared.
Four to twelve hours. Overnight in the fridge is the easiest approach. Longer steeping gives a thicker, more viscous infusion; shorter gives a lighter one.
No. Marshmallow root is naturally caffeine-free, which makes it a gentle choice at any hour.
That's the mucilage, and it's what you're brewing for. Marshmallow root is high in polysaccharides that swell in water into a soft gel. A slightly slippery, silky texture means you extracted it properly.
Yes. It's very mild, so it blends without taking over. Mullein, chamomile, licorice root, cinnamon, and a little raw honey all work well. If you're blending with herbs that need hot water, brew them separately and combine the two infusions.
Originally, yes. Nineteenth-century French pâte de guimauve was made by whipping Althaea root extract with sugar and egg white. Modern marshmallow confectionery uses gelatin or starch instead — the plant was replaced entirely.
Keep the pouch tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, and use a clean, dry utensil each time.
Because mucilage forms a coating in the digestive tract, marshmallow root may slow the absorption of medication taken at the same time. If you take oral medication, it's sensible to separate them by an hour or two, and to check with your healthcare provider first. As with any herbal product, talk to your provider if you are pregnant, nursing, or managing a health condition.
